University for Foreigners of Siena

The University for Foreigners of Siena is a public university involved both in teaching Italian as a foreign language and in scientific research activities concerning the diffusion of the Italian language and culture all over the world. In accordance with the tradition inaugurated by Tuscany Grand Duke Ferdinando I, who in 1588 founded in Siena the Toscana Favella Chair for teaching Italian to German students, in 1916, after the Unification of the Italian State, the first year of language and culture courses officially opened at the School of Italian Language and Culture for Foreigners of Siena.
The University for Foreigners of Siena has widened its range of educational activities and student body, from students who attend the Italian language courses to students involved in Undergraduate, Graduate, Postgraduate and PhD degree programs. The University for Foreigners of Siena is a meeting point where one can encounter languages and cultures from all over the world, and where can learn about different multicultural realities.
In addition to Italian for Foreigners, several languages are offered in the degree courses, including Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Russian, French, German, Spanish and English.

University for Foreigners of Siena has an exceptional tradition of research. Amongst the many sectors in which it excels there are studies on Teaching Italian as a Second/Foreign Language (Lifelong learning, Language Testing, E-learning methods and approaches), Philology and Linguistics thank to different research centre: CLUSS Centre - the Language Centre of the University, where courses of Italian Language and Culture are available for foreign students; CILS Centre for the Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language; DITALS Centre that certifies the practical and theoretical competence in the field of teaching Italian as a foreign language Certification of Competence in Teaching Italian as a Foreign Language; FAST Centre for on-line activities; CLASS Centre for Foreign Languages; Centre of Excellence- Permanent Linguistic Observatory for Italian abroad and Immigrant Languages in Italy; Ce.R.S.D.E.P Centre.

All courses, research activities and facilities (audiovisual and multimedia centre, IT facilities, computer centre, linguistic and computer laboratories, library) of the institution are located in our highly modern building located in Piazza Rosselli 27-28, Siena, inaugurated in 2008.

The University for Foreigners of Siena adopted a quality management system according to UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 and achieved the Certification for “Projecting and providing formative activities for undergraduate and postgraduate level”.


Welcome and Life in Siena

Siena is a small charming hill town in the middle of Tuscany which both tourists and incoming students will find easily accessible. Students are taught in small, welcoming surroundings, where art, culture, sport and music mesh perfectly. Our teaching, structures and educational systems are well developed and each student is guaranteed to live and collaborate with colleagues a multicultural context. Siena is not far from the international airports of Pisa and Florence to which it is connected through a well-developed transport system. Moving within the town is also easy, thanks to the bus network and the escalator systems, which connect the city centre to shopping centre, the train station and the University for Foreigners of Siena.

Cafeterias
Fees for the cafeteria service go from free (for the assignees of the scholarship) to € 4.00 (maximum income amount) and variate according to the type of lunch or dinner chosen by the student. The cafeteria service is offered by:

  • Cafeteria San Miniato, Via de  Nicola n. 9

Moreover, students of the University for Foreigners of Siena are allowed to buy (at the same fees) meal tickets for the Cafeteria in Via delle Grondaie n. 8 (near the University).
Health care
During his/her staying in Siena, the student has a right to medical care for his health needs. At his/her arrival, the student with Certificate of enrolment at the University for Foreigners of Siena and Identity Card or Passport will be allowed to choose the doctor at the ASL 7 office in Siena
Didactics and cultural activities
The welcome service gives the students the possibility to go on trips and excursions at convenient fees. Programs, destinations and fees are published each month at www.unistrasi.it
Sport
The University for Foreigners of Siena promotes sport activities, in cooperation with DSU and with CUS (University Sport Centre of Siena).
